WHAT IS FRACTION

  • A fraction is simply a number representing part of a whole.
  • A fraction is a numerical quantity that is not a whole number e.g. 1/2.
  • A fraction is a number results from dividing one whole number by another, e.g. 1/4, 3/7, 8/3 etc.
  • 3/8 is a fraction. It is read as three-eighth. Here 8 represent the number of equal parts into which the whole has been divided. 3 here is the number of equal parts which have been taken out. Here 3 is called the numerator and 8 is called the denominator.
  • Fractions with same denominators are called like fractions, e.g. 1/3, 2/3, 5/3 etc.
  • Fractions having different denominators are called unlike fractions, e.g. 4/7, 2/3, 8/17 etc.
  • Fractions having numerator bigger than the denominator are called improper fractions, e.g. 3/2, 4/3, 8/3 etc.
  • Fractions having numerator smaller than denominator are called proper fractions, e.g. 1/2, 2/3, 5/9 etc.
